Seven audience members are asked to participate in a table read for Provenance Report, an in-development satirical script about authorship, value, and the production of art-historical truth. Two seats are filled by planted audience members who begin going off-script and further blur the lines between truth and fiction.
After a struggling artist throws a failed project into a dumpster, an art historian discovers it and becomes convinced the object is a lost work by Felix Gonzalez-Torres. What begins as discarded studio debris is gradually legitimized through scholarly research, institutional authority, social-media discourse, and the art market, culminating in its transformation into a multimillion-dollar artwork.
Moving between the artist’s studio, the academy, social media, and the auction house, Provenance Report examines how speculation and cultural authority can manufacture meaning and value, and the absurdities that emerge when those systems begin to reinforce one another.
